Number to Roman Numerals

About the Number to Roman Numerals Converter

The Number to Roman Numerals Converter turns any modern number into its classical Roman form — turning 2024 into MMXXIV, 99 into XCIX, or 1492 into MCDXCII. Students completing history or maths assignments, designers picking elegant chapter numbers for books and movies, tattoo artists working with significant dates, and clockmakers labelling watch faces all use Roman numerals daily.

How Roman numerals work

Roman numerals use seven letters: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), M (1000). Numbers are built by combining letters: II = 2, VII = 7, XIII = 13. The subtractive rule lets you write IV for 4 (one before five) and IX for 9 (one before ten) to avoid four-letter repetition. The system handles values from 1 to 3,999 with standard letters — larger numbers add a horizontal bar above the letter to multiply it by 1,000.

How to use it

  1. Type any positive integer from 1 to 3,999 into the input box.
  2. The Roman numeral appears instantly.
  3. Or paste a Roman numeral to see the modern number (reverse mode).
  4. Copy either result with one click.

Common use cases

Numbering book chapters, naming movie sequels (Rocky II, Star Wars Episode VI), formatting outline headers in academic papers, labelling the year on building cornerstones, picking elegant date formats for wedding invitations and tattoos, completing maths or Latin homework, and reading classical clock faces.
